A GUIDE TO BUYING Gold

Historically gold has always been a popular option for investors and continues to be viewed as an essential part of a well-balanced portfolio.

The enduring value of gold combined with its inherent stability over long periods of time cements its status as a timeless symbol of wealth and credibility. Investors are drawn to gold due to its acceptance as an insurance policy for financial wellbeing, often never liquidating the asset unless absolutely needed, handing down to the next generation as the foundation for financial growth.

At Knights we have an open approach and feel transparency is important when recommending products and services, equipping you with the necessary information to make key, informed decisions. When planning to invest in gold it is important to do so with these considerations in mind.

UNDERSTAND THE TYPE OF GOLD YOU ARE BUYING

Here at Knights we sell gold in different forms. They are all classed as investment grade, however they have different attributes depending on what you purchase. Bars and coins are the two most popular forms, each with different tax implications in the future. In the UK all investment grade gold is VAT exempt although only specific coins are Capital Gains Tax free such as Britannia coins and Sovereign coins. Bars do not share the same legal status in the UK and are subject to different taxes upon liquidation, however, they are more cost effective upon purchase and come in a much wider array of denominations to choose from. This is known as the fungibility of an asset as it is easier to liquidate the desired amount at a given time in the future.

IS IT THE RIGHT INVESTMENT FOR YOU?

Gold isn’t the only way to invest in precious metals, we also offer an array of silver products which may satisfy your investment requirements. Similarly to gold different products have different attributes which may affect your decision to choose, when looking to purchase contemplate which will best suit your investment objectives.

DETERMINE THE DENOMINATIONS OF THE GOLD YOU BUY

Investment grade gold purchases are made in specific denominations which are recognised globally. Bars are produced using the metric system into grams and kilograms, coins are measured using the imperial troy oz system which includes partials including halves, quarters and tenths. There are exceptions such as the Krugerrand which is 916.7 fineness weighing 33.39g still containing a troy oz of fine gold and the Sovereign which is 916.7 fineness weighing 7.98g containing 7.3224g of fine gold. The important factor to know is the fine gold content of your chosen product which can be used to determine the value of your asset in the future.

HOW MUCH OF MY WEALTH SHOULD I ALLOCATE TO PRECIOUS METALS

Before you purchase gold, it may be worth considering how much of your wealth you are looking to allocate into the asset class to strategize your portfolio. There are many ways gold can be used to complement your future financial stability, some investors like to keep 20% in metals as a long term insurance policy against loss of other more risky investment choices; others prefer gold as a private pension pot which they pay into every time they have spare savings exchanging into gold on a monthly or annual basis. Decide on your personal driving factors and strategize accordingly.

UNDERSTAND THE INVESTMENT

Before finalising your transaction take the time to understand the product, denomination, fineness, and tax implications upon sale. Importantly consider the practical aspects such as storage, insurance and delivery.

WHY CHOOSE US

As independent precious metal merchants we offer an unprecedented ‘old fashioned’ approach to our client service, coupled with modern facilities and open communication. We pride ourselves on competitive rates, an excellent reputation and an above and beyond approach to our client network.

WHEN TO INVEST IN GOLD

This is the question which has been at the forefront of investors' minds since the beginning of modern times. There are many factors which have a determining interest on the value of gold such as geopolitics, economics, global demand, and global financial shifts like central bank interest rates. Research historical trends and use the information as a point of reference within your sphere of knowledge to give yourself the best opportunity of buying at the correct time.

IN CONCLUSION

As with all investments it is imperative to understand all associated risks and potential returns before making decisions. Whilst gold has the potential to offer diversification and stability it is accompanied with a degree of risk. The wealth of historical data and trust within respected financial establishments does offer a considerable amount of reassurance, particularly compared with other investment options on the market.

John Pierpont Morgan is famously quoted as saying, ‘That [credit] is an evidence of banking, but it [credit] is not the money itself. Money is gold, and nothing else.’

Be informed, be confident and navigate your journey with Knights Bullion.

WHY YOU SHOULD INVEST AND WHAT YOU SHOULD INVEST IN

Investment gold has many established benefits which draws confidence from central banks, nation states and private individuals including:

High Liquidity

Gold is easily bought and sold quickly

Wealth preservation

Gold has historically held its value over long periods of time

A truly global asset

The value of gold is recognised globally across all financial sectors and cultures

Inflation protection

Gold acts as a hedge against inflation

Tax free investment

Gold investment is exempt from VAT in the UK and certain products are also Capital Gains Tax free

When considering your gold investment deciding on bars or coins should be led by your investment objectives and what denominations you wish to have available to liquidate in the future. It is advisable to have the flexibility to liquidate a portion of your asset rather than have everything tied up in one large sum.

Bars are made from 999.9 fine 24 carat gold, to be recognised as investment grade coins must be between 900.0 fine and 999.9 fine. There are some key differences between the two which you need to be aware of.

THE BENEFITS OF INVESTING IN GOLD COINS

Gold coins produced by the Royal Mint have a face value and therefore have the unique benefit of being classed as currency in the UK, meaning they are Capital Gains Tax free upon liquidation. Many investors see this as an excellent reason to exclusively buy Royal Mint coins as the potential tax savings outweighs the higher cost on the front end of the transaction. There are reputable well recognised mints all over the globe who produce coins favoured by merchants and collectors for their history and aesthetic characteristics; with many having built in security features and details making them a trusted store of wealth and medium of exchange.

THE BENEFITS OF INVESTING IN GOLD BARS

Gold bars from Knights come in a wide array of weights from multiple sources, all of which are produced by LBMA (London Bullion Market Association) accredited refiners. These refiners are listed on the Good Delivery List to exacting standards for trading on the OTC (Over The Counter) decentralised global market; meaning you are buying the highest quality products available which are recognised everywhere on the globe. Weights range from 1 gram to 1 kilogram making them ideal for investors across the entire spectrum, from those looking to buy small amounts to larger investors looking to secure wealth outside of the established banking system. Gold bars offer the range, trust and flexibility to be considered by all of our clients.

Ultimately the choice between coins and bars must be defined by you, regardless of what you choose; gold remains an excellent way to diversify your portfolio, hedge against risk and hedge against inflation.

Be your own central bank.

HOW GOLD WILL ELEVATE YOUR INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO

At Knights we believe having a varied financial portfolio is one of the most important steps in taking you towards financial freedom and security, and that gold is an essential element for portfolio diversification.

Gold has been held in high esteem for millennia and has been used to store wealth for centuries. Adding gold to your portfolio is an astute move, especially during times of uncertainty and economic instability.

Investing in gold is a hedge against inflation. There are several factors that drive inflation: increases in the cost of raw materials, increases in taxes, supply chain issues and primarily, increases in currency supply which act to decrease existing currency value. During periods of inflation, gold acts as a barrier, avoiding devaluation, meaning that when you come to liquidate your asset, you have hedged against the erosion of your wealth should the economy take a downturn.

Investing in gold is a safeguard against stock market volatility. Stock markets are notoriously unstable with one consistency, unpredictability. Gold is often known to be inversely correlated during periods of stress in the stock market meaning when stocks go down, historically, gold goes up. This can help reduce your exposure if the stock market takes a downturn and provides a well-positioned hedge if you are heavily invested in stocks.

Gold is often seen as an outsider investment, which is relatively resistant to impacts on the global economy during times of crisis. Durable in nature and performance, gold has thrived through global conflict and economic crashes of the worst nature making it a smart addition to any portfolio.
